Living rooms look best with three layers: overhead light for the whole room, lamps where people read or talk, and a softer glow from the walls. Mixing finishes is fine; brass and walnut sit well together, and pleated or linen shades keep the light warm.
How many lights does a living room need?
Most living rooms need at least three sources: an overhead fixture, one or two lamps by the seating, and wall or accent lights. Warm-white bulbs around 2700–3000K keep the room comfortable in the evening.
